New interview with Katee and After Ellen

“Somebody at one point in my life told me I’m very androgynous,” Sackhoff told me. “And I never saw that in myself. I think what it was I lived in a small town and my dad always said ‘Play with the boys until you get hurt.’ And so I was bound and determined to keep up with the boys. I think he was speaking mostly in the context of soccer, but I took it in this life sort of way because I was hanging out with the boys and jumping over barbed wire fences and kind of had this desire to keep up with boys physically.”

Was that a role that was offered to you, or did you have to audition for it?

SACKHOFF: I did audition for it. It’s actually a crazy story. I went in once, and then didn’t hear anything. When I went in for the first time, I just met with David. And then, the next time, they were like, “Okay, it’s down to you and four girls.” I was like, “All right.” And they were like, “Vin’s in town, so you’re gonna have to jump. When they say jump, you’ve gotta jump.” I was like, “Okay,” thinking that it could be 5 pm one night, or 8 pm one night. I got a phone call at 11 o’clock at night, from all the producers and the casting director, which thank god the casting director is a woman because I would have been like, “You want me to come where?”

So, at midnight, I got out of bed, I took off my face mask and I drove to Vin’s house with my mother on the phone going, “If I don’t call you in an hour, this is the address I’m at.” And she was like, “Katee, nothing is going to happen.” I was like, “I know, but this is so weird!” And, I got the job because I showed up. I truly believe that. When I was driving home that night, at 2 o’clock in the morning, I called my mom and said, “I do believe I just got that job because I showed up.” As far as acting goes, you get to a certain point where I think everyone can do the job and it comes down to a level of commitment. I think sometimes all you have to do is show up.

Former “Battlestar Galactica’’ actress Katee Sackhoff (inset), who famously turned down the role of werewolf Debbie Pelt on “True Blood’’ to work on a Boston-based TV show that, sadly, was never picked up, confirmed via Twitter that she’s in the Worcester area filming the indie movie “Lockdown.’’ The movie, which takes place on a college campus, is being directed by John Stimpson, who’s made a list of small local films. Stimpson’s website says “Lockdown’’ is “a psychological thriller that digs into the idea of the Psychopath Test, and whether it is a valid tool for psychologists, parole officers, or the police.’’ According to the Internet Movie Database, other actors involved in the project include New Hampshire’s own John Shea, and Bart Johnson, who starred with Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens in “High School Musical.’’

Katee Sackhoff has found another series. Since Battlestar Galactica ended three years ago, the actress has bounced around from NBC’s short-lived Bionic Woman to stints on Fox’s 24 to CBS’ CSI.

Now A&E has given a series order to her latest project, Longmire — described as a contemporary crime thriller from the producers of TNT’s The Closer. She’ll play a Philadelphia detective transferred to a small Wyoming town. Also in the cast: Robert Taylor and Lou Diamond Phillips. Longmire is set to become A&E’s fourth drama following The Beast, The Glades and Breakout Kings and will premiere next year.
