New Mexico Film Office Director Nick Maniatis announced today that production will begin on the one-hour-long drama series Longmire, from Warner Horizon Television, in March 2012. Production will take place in Santa Fe, Las Vegas and the surrounding areas. The series will launch with 10 episodes on A&E this summer.
The production will employ at least 130 New Mexico crewmembers and more than 160 principal and background talent.
Longmire will star Robert Taylor (The Matrix), Katee Sackhoff (Battlestar Galactica), Lou Diamond Phillips (Stand and Deliver, Courage Under Fire, Young Guns, La Bamba), Bailey Chase (Saving Grace, Damages), Cassidy Freeman (Smallville) and newcomer Adam Bartley.
Based on the Walt Longmire mystery novels by bestselling author Craig Johnson, Longmire is named after its central character, Walt Longmire (Taylor), the charismatic, dedicated and unflappable sheriff of Absaroka County, Wyo., who is rebuilding his life and career after his wife’s death. Widowed for only one year, he is a man in psychic repair but buries his pain behind his brave face, unassuming grin, and wry wit.

“Somebody at one point in my life told me I’m very androgynous,” Sackhoff told me. “And I never saw that in myself. I think what it was I lived in a small town and my dad always said ‘Play with the boys until you get hurt.’ And so I was bound and determined to keep up with the boys. I think he was speaking mostly in the context of soccer, but I took it in this life sort of way because I was hanging out with the boys and jumping over barbed wire fences and kind of had this desire to keep up with boys physically.”

Was that a role that was offered to you, or did you have to audition for it?

SACKHOFF: I did audition for it. It’s actually a crazy story. I went in once, and then didn’t hear anything. When I went in for the first time, I just met with David. And then, the next time, they were like, “Okay, it’s down to you and four girls.” I was like, “All right.” And they were like, “Vin’s in town, so you’re gonna have to jump. When they say jump, you’ve gotta jump.” I was like, “Okay,” thinking that it could be 5 pm one night, or 8 pm one night. I got a phone call at 11 o’clock at night, from all the producers and the casting director, which thank god the casting director is a woman because I would have been like, “You want me to come where?”

So, at midnight, I got out of bed, I took off my face mask and I drove to Vin’s house with my mother on the phone going, “If I don’t call you in an hour, this is the address I’m at.” And she was like, “Katee, nothing is going to happen.” I was like, “I know, but this is so weird!” And, I got the job because I showed up. I truly believe that. When I was driving home that night, at 2 o’clock in the morning, I called my mom and said, “I do believe I just got that job because I showed up.” As far as acting goes, you get to a certain point where I think everyone can do the job and it comes down to a level of commitment. I think sometimes all you have to do is show up.

EXCLUSIVE: Katee Sackhoff is in final negotiations to play the female lead opposite Vin Diesel in the untitled Chronicles Of Riddick sequel. In the movie, written and directed by David Twohy, the Battlestar Galactica alumna will play Dahl, a Nordic mercenary tracking Riddick (Diesel). Production on the sequel resumed recently in Montreal after a two-month break due to financing issues. Sackhoff, who had long been rumored for the choice for the role, will segue from Riddick to her new A&E series Longmire. The actress, who co-starred on the final season of 24 and did an arc on CSI, has movies Haunting In Georgia and Evil Sexy Genius coming out later this year. She is with Gersh and Bleu.
